Brian Taylor, Field Applications Engineer at Schneider Electric Motion USA discusses the Lexium MDrive Ethernet integrated motor+driver+controller with multiple networking protocols available. The demo shown uses the LMD Ethernet products with PLCs from: Siemens (Profinet), Schneider Electric (Modbus/TCP) and Allen Bradley (EtherNet/IP).
Description of the demo
The Ethernet demo shown in the video demonstrates the use of the top three industrial Ethernet platforms interfaced with the new Lexium MDrive Integrated Ethernet products. These platforms are:
- EtherNet/IP (Rockwell/Allen Bradley platform):
EtherNet/IP is the most prolific industrial protocol used today, covering 30% of industrial networks and is most popular in the North America. For the demo an Allen-Bradley CompactLogix 1768 PLC was used networked to a Lexium MDrive Ethernet NEMA 23 (57 mm).
- Profinet (Siemens platform):
Profinet is a scalable, open networking standard developed by Siemens. Profinet accounts for 28% of industrial networks. For the demo, a Siemens S7 PLC was networked to a Lexium MDrive Profinet NEMA 23 (57 mm).
- MODBUS/TCP (Modicon/Schneider Electric platform):
Modbus/TCP is the TCP/IP implementation of the well established MODBUS protocol. 22% of the world’s industrial Ethernet networks utilize MODBUS/TCP.For the demo, a Schneider Electric Modicon M258 PLC was networked to a Lexium MDrive Ethernet NEMA 23 (57 mm).
A Schneider Electric Magelis HMI is networked to the Modicon M258 PLC and used to execute the operation of the system. The M258 PLC uses I/O connections to the Allen-Bradley and Siemens PLC’s to activate the separate systems.
All three PLC’s will then control identical motion profiles with the Lexium MDrive using the protocols specific to them.
This demo illustrates the ability of the Lexium MDrive to integrate into 80% the world’s Industrial Ethernet Networks.
